As you may recall from last month's post, I had a large degree of skepticism when my pregnancy tests were coming back positive. I had two positive tests in one day and then the next day they were coming back negative. I concluded that I may have miscarried and quit testing once the blood test confirmed a negative.
Lo and behold, while we were in Europe I started testing once the spotting started showing because I wanted to make sure it was OK to drink alcohol while on our trip. To my disbelief, I got an extremely positive pregnancy test. Once again, I decided I was miscarrying since I had started bleeding so I never felt much excitement at the possibility of pregnancy. Sure enough, over the course of the next 3 days I tested every morning and confirmed I was miscarrying because the line became lighter and lighter. As disappointing as this sounds, I was so caught up in the excitement of Europe that I was not too concerned or upset about this as I was just happy that I could at least get pregnant.
I ran out of pregnancy tests in Europe after the 4th day so I quit testing since it was pretty obvious that my period arrived. On the plane ride home I because extremely dizzy and nauseous which I convinced myself to be due to lack of sleep/jet-lag and not enough water. However, when I got home I decided to test once more just to confirm. Once again, I got a very positive test. At this point, I was completely confused and dismissed this as a fluke. Sure enough, in the morning using a different test, I got a very clear negative.
I started putting clues together wondering why with one test I kept getting positives even after spotting showed up while the other test I always got negatives. The pregnancy tests I use come from a clinic that provides free samples and I got a whole batch of them. The test that kept getting me positives came in a plain white package that had the letters "FOB" stamped on the front of it and nothing else. I began to wonder if these were OPKs and not pregnancy tests because nowhere on the test did it indicate it was a "pregnancy" test or an "Hcg" test.
With a little investigative work and the help of my sister we figured out that these tests were NOT pregnancy tests. In fact, they weren't even URINE tests. Yep--that's right. I was utilizing fecal tests used on woman over the age of 50 to test for rectal cancer. The reason I was getting positives is because the tests assess for blood in the stool and since I was placing urine on them while on my period that is why I was getting positives. Oy!
I can't wait to share this story with everyone once I get pregnant and tell everyone about the times I tested with fecal tests and couldn't figure out why I was getting positives!
In other news, Jon meets with the urologist next week to start his first batch of Clomid. It will take 2-3 months to see improved results of his swimmers. I'm feeling very hopeful about this!
April 27th marked the one year point for us. Earlier today I was thinking about how at this time a year ago I never would've imagined I would be one of those couples that would take more than a year to get pregnant. Absolutely not fair and plain frustrating. However, over the past two months I've found my enthusiasm wane and my investment in TTC diminish because quite frankly, I'm just bored. We continue to try, but my level of interest has significantly dropped to the point that I have allowed my life to become occupied with other thoughts and interests because they are far more stimulating than this one. Stay tuned!
